Your PSAT/NMSQT score is a solid early estimate of your SAT score. College Board puts both tests on one score scale, so an 1150 on the PSAT/NMSQT means you'd be expected to score about 1150 on the SAT if you had taken it that same day. Where you go from there depends on what you do before test day.
Fall 2026 scores reach students on October 22, November 5 or November 12, 2026, depending on when your school sent in its answers. This guide shows you how to read your report, what it predicts for the SAT and what to do this week.
When fall 2026 PSAT scores come out
Schools gave the PSAT/NMSQT between October 1 and October 30, 2026. Your scores arrive on one of three dates, depending on when your school submitted everyone's answers:
| Your school submitted answers by | Your scores arrive |
|---|---|
| October 9, 2026 | October 22, 2026 |
| October 23, 2026 | November 5, 2026 |
| October 30, 2026 | November 12, 2026 |
If you took the test as part of a state testing program, your state confirms when scores come out, so check with your school.
You can see your scores in three places:
- The BigFuture School app. If you gave a mobile number on test day, you'll get a text when your scores are ready. If you didn't, sign in with the registration number on your sign-in ticket. The app is for U.S. students aged 13 and older.
- Your school. Every school gets a PDF called Your Score Report for each student. Ask your counselor for yours.
- Your College Board account. If you're 13 or older, studentscores.collegeboard.org adds more detail, such as your state and country percentiles and whether you met each benchmark.
How to read your PSAT score
Your report gives you three scores:
- A total score from 320 to 1520.
- A Reading and Writing score from 160 to 760.
- A Math score from 160 to 760.
Each score comes with a score range: the scores you'd likely get if you took the test again. Read your score as a band, not an exact point.
Percentiles compare you with students in your grade who took the PSAT/NMSQT over the last three years. If you're in the 75th percentile, you scored as well as or better than 75% of them.
Benchmarks show whether you're on track to be ready for college. For 11th graders they're 460 in Reading and Writing and 510 in Math. For 10th graders they're 430 and 480.
The most useful part for planning is Knowledge and Skills. It shows how you did in each of the eight content domains, four in Reading and Writing and four in Math, and roughly what share of its section each one covers. A weak domain that covers a big share of its section is where your practice pays off first.
What your PSAT score predicts for the SAT
College Board scores every test in the SAT Suite on one scale. In its own example, a student with a 500 in PSAT/NMSQT Math would be expected to score 500 in SAT Math if they had taken the SAT the same day. So your PSAT score is a fair starting point for your SAT goal.
Two things to keep in mind:
- The SAT's scale goes higher. College Board fits each test's range to its grade level, so the PSAT/NMSQT tops out at 1520 and the SAT at 1600. If you scored at or near 1520, your PSAT can't show how far above it you could go on the SAT.
- The prediction is for the day you tested. Your score can grow from there. In College Board's example, a student who scores 500 in PSAT/NMSQT Math and 550 in SAT Math a year later has grown 50 points, which it says likely came from hard work in and out of school.
Turn your score into a plan. Enter your PSAT total in the PSAT to SAT predictor, along with your section scores if you have them, then pick an SAT date and a goal. It shows the points to gain, the weeks until your test, the points a week that takes and a plan to test day. It's free, and you don't need an account.
Juniors: your Selection Index and National Merit
If you're a junior, the PSAT/NMSQT is also the entry test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) uses your Selection Index as its first screen: double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score and divide by 10.
The index runs from 48 to 228. With 620 in Reading and Writing and 500 in Math, you'd have (2 × 620 + 500) ÷ 10 = 174. Because Reading and Writing counts twice, 10 more points there add 2 to your index, while 10 more points in Math add 1.
About 1.3 million students enter the program each year, and about 50,000 earn recognition. About 16,000 of them become Semifinalists, the top scorers in each state, so that cutoff differs by state. The other 34,000 or so are Commended Students, picked with one national cutoff. Students who qualify hear through their high schools in September 2027. NMSC sets the qualifying scores itself, so treat any cutoff you see online before then as an estimate.
An asterisk next to your Selection Index means you didn't meet the program's entry requirements or your score is for guidance only. Your school counselor can tell you why.
Pick your SAT date
Your PSAT score tells you where you're starting. The SAT date tells you how long you have.
The first SAT after scores come out is November 7, 2026, but registration closes October 23, or October 27 with the late fee. If your scores arrived October 22, here's how to choose between November 7 and December 5. For most students, the two dates that fit are:
- December 5, 2026. Register by November 20, or by November 24 with the late fee. Scores arrive December 18.
- March 6, 2027. Register by February 19, or by February 23 with the late fee. Scores arrive March 19.
Counting from October 22, December gives you about six weeks, which suits a small gap between your PSAT score and your goal, and March about 19 weeks for a bigger one. From November 12, it's about three weeks and 16 weeks. Every upcoming 2026–27 date and deadline is on our SAT test dates page, where you can add them to your calendar.

What to do this week
Find your two weakest domains
In Knowledge and Skills, look for the domains where you did worst relative to how much of their section they cover. Those two are your first targets.
See where you stand today
Your PSAT was weeks ago. A free 40-question diagnostic shows where you are now and turns your weak domains into specific skills to practice.
Set your date and your pace
Put your scores into the PSAT to SAT predictor, choose December 5, 2026 or March 6, 2027, and plan your weeks around the pace it shows. Then log every question you miss in the free mistake log to see where your points went and what to fix first.
Frequently asked questions
When do fall 2026 PSAT scores come out?
Students get their scores on October 22, November 5 or November 12, 2026, depending on when their school submitted answers. Look in the BigFuture School app or ask your school counselor.
Does my PSAT score predict my SAT score?
Roughly, yes. College Board scores the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT on one scale, so your PSAT score is about what you'd have scored on the SAT that day. Your SAT score depends on how you prepare before test day.
What is a good PSAT score?
College Board's benchmarks are a useful yardstick: for 11th graders, 460 in Reading and Writing and 510 in Math. Your percentile shows how you compare with other students in your grade.
How is the PSAT Selection Index calculated?
Double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score and divide by 10. The index runs from 48 to 228, and NMSC uses it to choose the students it recognizes in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
What PSAT score do I need for National Merit?
NMSC sets the cutoffs after the test: one national cutoff for Commended Students and a separate Semifinalist cutoff for each state. Students who qualify hear through their high schools in September 2027, so cutoffs you see online before then are estimates.
